SHEEP WORRYING.
DIFFICULTY OF PREVENTION. That the prevention of sheep worrying by stray dogs, although recognised as causing tanners a lot of damage and worry, was a. very difficult matter to check was the opinion -expressed at tite meeting of the Alauawatu County Council yesterday. '1 he subject was introduced when a letter was read from Air H. E. Port, Lees Line, Eeikling. stating that,-together with several other settlers, lie had recently lost a number of sheep Enough worrying by dogs, and lie asked whether the council could pass a by-law making it compulsory for all dogs to be securely shut up at night. Cr. D. W. Reid said he would like something done in the matter, the chairman (Cr. AY. E. Barber) agreeing that whilst thiswwas .necessary he would like to know what was to he don-a and how it could be done. Cr. Reid went on to say that the position was getting serious, and lie wondered whether the council should approach lion. J. (1. Cobbs in the matter. An increase in the tax for the keeping of fancy dogs to £lO per year, Cr. Boyce suggested, might improve matters. Cr. A. -V. Alorcom said the council or r.nv other body could not support a law that provided for the shooting after sunset of all dogs not secured. The chairman observed that the case of sheep worrying bv dogs was a hard one to control, and lie con’d not see that the council was able to do anything in rcg'itd to the request. 11 was decided to reply staling that while the council was sympathetic it c-ould not take any' action. INSURANCE SC rill AIE PROPOSED. Reference to the worrying of sheep by dogs was also made at the monthly meeting of tie Kairanga County Council yesterday. Or. AY. G. Shannon stressed the necessity for the establishment of an insurance scheme, which all dog owners would have to pay into, to recompense owners who suffered loss of .stock through worrying bv dogs, the speaker stating that 'whi'e he had been given judgment for £l-10 for slte-ep lost through worrying by dogs he had not receive done penny. On the chairman’s suggestion it was decided to hold matter over for later discussion.
