OPTIMISTS’ CLUB.

SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT. The seventh annual report on the activities of the Palmerston North Optimists’ Club states: —_ “Owing to the formation early m the year* of a special committee for the purpose of securing new members, we are able to report a greatly increased membership. As a consequence the attendance at the weekly luncheons has beeii well maintained, and . we desire to place on record appreciation for the good service rendered by this committee. The club has been fortunate in securing good speakers at club luncheons, and our thanks are due to those gentlemen who have kindly helped us in this way. and especially the members of the Y.M.C.A. Debating Club lor their assistance in supplying speakers on various occasions. Special mention must be made of the efforts of Optimist'R. Hopwood and other members of the programme committee in arranging for speakers. The singing at club luncheons lias been well looked after again by Optimist G. Foster, assisted by Optimists ,1. Smillie and T. Simpson, and thanks are also due to Optimists J. Smillie and C. Cater for their work ns pianists. “The service ideal has been kept in mind, and-in-many ways club members have been able to do small services in a quiet and modest manner. The club is to be congratulated on its donation of £6 6s to the Camp Pohangina fund, for the purpose of sending needy boys to camp. It is, however, to be regretted that the Big Brother movement has not yet been initiated here, but is to be hoped that this work will be commenced during the coming year, as it is a fine opportunity for real service whereby members can assist the more unfortunate lads of our city in a conscientious and practical manner. “The annual dinner was a most successful function, and the club also held an enjoyable social evening. Visits were also exchanged with the Business Girls’ Club, and also the Rotary Club, these being much appreciated. Our thanks are again due to Mrs Coates and members of the staff of Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s tearoom for their courteous attention and service at our weekly luncheons. The committee trusts that the activities of the club will prosper during the coming year, and members are thanked for their co-operation during the past year in making it a very successful one in the history of the club.”
