INTENTION OF BRITAIN.

THE VERSAILLES TREATY. REACTION OF GERMANY. (Times Cables.) Received March 12, 10.10 a.m. LONDON, March 11. Tho Times says that nowhere outside Britain is the increase in the British Estimates misunderstood or resented. “Whatever foreigners think of British diplomacy they do not think that armed forces are likely to be used, except in defence of a victim of aggression. If it was the intention of the British Government to get Part Five of the Treaty of Versailles superseded by a system in which all would be equal then no purpose would be served by harping upon a breach of the treaty. “Herr Hitler’s present policy favours taking collective sanctions, but some advisers see the salvation of Germany in gradually renewing its strength and attracting friends from other nations, thus gaining more by the old system of blocs and alliances than by a new deal of union against the aggressor,” the Times comments. The newspapers describe the coming House of Commons debate on the defence White Paper as one of the most important this Parliament. Since the White Paper was issued there has been a growing volume of Liberal and Labour speeches throughout the country in opposition to it. On Monday night, says the Daily Herald, the House of Commons will be invaded by mass deputations who will protest to their members against the Government’s rearmament policy. The invasion will be preceded by a service at Christ Church, Westminster, conducted by Miss Maude Royden. The League of Nations Union, the National Peace Council, Labour and co-operative parties and tho Free Church are holding protest meetings throughout the country. • . . The Daily Telegraph’s political correspondent says that an arrangement has been made by. which Mr Stanley Baldwin will make the opening speech instead of the .Socialist front bench proposing its vote of censure. Later Mr .0. R. Attlee will submit the Socialist motion, to which Sir Austen Chamberlain will propose an amendment which will sum up the Ministerial view. Sir Herliert Samuel, Mr Winston Churchill, Mr L. C. M. S. Amery, Mr J. Maxton, and Sir Stafford Cripps will be other speakers.
