FAST TIMES AT CHRISTCHURCH. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 11. The European distance champion, Jean Taris, competing in a 440 yards scratch race to-night in the tepid baths, broke the New Zealand record by 15 l-ssec. and his previous best time in the Dominion, registered at Auckland in tepid salt water, by 1 l-ssec. His time was 4min 58 1-osec. He covered the first 220 yards in 2min 21 l-ssce, 4-ssec better than the New Zealand record for this distance. Emile Poussard won the invitation dive by more than 25 points, giving a thrilling exhibition. A surprise in the 440 yards event was the defeat of the New Zealand title-holder, D. H. Symes, by C. Cliff, the former provincial champion over this distance. In a special attempt R. Dimmer set a record for the 100 yards intermediate boys’ provincial championship. His time was 60 4-ssec. bettering the- previous record by 3-ssee.
