FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By' “Binocular.”)

The officials of the Manawatu Racing Club have every reason to be satisfied with the nominations tor the autumn meeting. An increase of 86 for the two days points to big ficidis being Hie order.

There was a forfeit for the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes due on Friday and, as a point was made of getting into touch with every owner, there are good grounds to cxpoct that the majority of the 28 youngsters will go to the post. Although there are only 10 horses nominated for tho Awapuni Cup as compared with 13 last year, tho field might well bo larger thaii 12 /months ago when six accepted and four went to the post. Silver Sing, last year’s winner, is again entered. An Australian campaign is mapped out for Silver Ring, and tho Awapuni Cup should fully test him before- he departs. With Nightly, Gay Blonde, Sporting Blood, Red Manfred, Cuddle, Fracas, llazoor, Rulanut, and Miss Husliabyo forming the field, its quality is unquestionable. It is rather surprising to find that, not one of the horses who contested the hurdle ovent at the Manawatu mooting last March is included in the list for tho forthcoming meeting. Blacksmith, tho winner on that occasion, is spelling, while Acervate, tho ninnev-up to the Arrowsmith gelding, is dead.

The interval of 12 months has also brought a material change in tho composition of the field for the Prince of Wales Handicap, for of last year’s field only Aga Khan and Rust again figure. Tho latter ran second to Arrow Lad last March, hut tho winner is now enjoying days of idleness. Senegal, who ran fifth, is in Tasmania, and recently registered an overdue win.

Cuihis, who dead-heated with Good Hunting in tho J. M. Johnston Memorial Handicap at Awapuni last March, is again included in this year’s field, as is Royal Routine, who was accepted for on that occasion only to forgo his engagement. Burnish, last, year’s winner of the Sires’ Produce Stakes, and Golden Hair, tho 1933 winner of the two-year-old classic, are also therein.

Last year seven borscse were carded to contest the 30tli Manawatu Stakes. but only four went, to tho post. Tho hotting was restricted in consequence .and the stake of £250 entailed a substantial loss to the club. While it is a pity to sec classic events vanish from a programme, the Manawatu Club had little option but to delete it from this year’s card.

Backers suffered a severe setback in the Manawatu Stakes last year when Diatomous, who was entrusted with almost five times as much as Pomp, the second elect on the totalisator, was beaten by a head. On that occasion Pcmp was ridden by L. G. Morris, hut racegoers are no longer to witness this vigorous horseman in action, tor ho recently handed m iiis jeekey’s license.

Tho merit of Chief Marionette’s victory in tho Rangitikei Cup last Wednesday was borne out, at the Waikato meeting on Saturday when the Chief Ruler mare won the Storey Memorial Handicap to give W. J. Broughton another winning ride. From all accounts the success was freely anticipated locally. Sir Charles Clifford lias entered Knock Out, Fracas. Hororata, and Owlsglcam for tho Manawatu mooting, and H. Cutts will take them to Awapuni at the close of the Trcntham meeting, where the three firstnamed will bo raced, says a southern writer. Owlsglcam cannot run on the first day at Trcntham, having become ineligible for the Trial Plate through her success at Motukarara. She is in a seven-furlong handicap on tho second clay, hut. may he reserved for Awapuni, where a six-furlong race each clay will suit her hotter.

e Malvasia did best of the newcomers in the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes (says a southern writer). After jumping out well she was in the first half dozen all the way, while her smart dash at the finish came only a sride too late to earn third money. Her turn will come soon, Mal-vasia-is a Valkyrian throc-ycar-old, trained by J. B. Pearson, who also handled the filly’s dam, Malmsey, a useful marc by Claronceaux from the speedy Charmilla, by Charlemagne 11. from Armilla, by Castor from Necklace, a three-quarter sister to Medallion, the sire of Achilles.
