DEMAND FOR BREAD.
INCIDENT IN CHRISTCHURCH. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH March 11. Shouting “We want bread,” forty women, the wives of unemployed men, besieged the central relief depot this morning demanding additional food. When they were told that no supplies were available an angry demonstration resulted and the place was almost in a turmoil until the police were summoned and a sergeant arrived.
After several scuffles the depot was cleared.
Later a deputation of women waited on the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee, which also stated that it could do nothing in the matter.
Later, meeting the Alayor (Air D. G. Sullivan) in his room, the women were promised that the dozen most urgent cases would be helped by the Salvation Army to-morrow morning.
