TWO NARROW SUCCESSES. Y.M.C.A. DRAW WITH PALMERSTON. Following an interruption of two weeks as' the result of the intervention of tho Hawke Clip fixture with Marlborough, and the postponement of the series the following week owing to the grounds being unfit for play, the inter-club competitions were resumed on Saturday under very pleasant conditions. On the opening day Palmerston had been opposed to City Council and the leading team had compiled 112 for two wickets when rain compelled an adjournment. While their claimed the closure at the afternoon adjournment, they had to be content with sharing the points with City Council; indeed had the latter eleven entered upon their task with greater vigour they might have forced a win. Y.M.C.A. had a narrow escape from defeat at the hands of High School, the latter falling only two runs short oi their opponents’ total. Assisted by tho fact that Old Boys batted two men short, United won through by 19 runs in a game wherein the fortunes of the rival clubs swayed to and fro. THE HONOURS BOARD. SENIOR BATTING.

PALMERSTON v. CITY COUNCIL. With two wickets down for 112 runs, Palmerston were in a very promising position when they resumed their match with City Council, and although Ingham, who had been not out with 46 against his name, only added an additional eight runs, the succeeding partnership of J. Ongley and M. A. Ongley proved to bo quite a fruitful one, the formerly returning 46 and the latter I 25. At the afternoon tea adjournment I Palmerston declared their innings ed with six wickets down for 207. The opening pair for City Council, 01 liver and Me Vicar, were content to play a defensive game and they held the attack at bay for a long period, although the telegraph was only registering 58 when the partnership was broken. Davidson stayed long enough to assist Me Vicar to add a further 24 runs while MeVicar and Eyre added 36 for the third wicket partnership, MeVicar finally falling a victim at 41 to a delivery from his father. M. A. Ongley accounted for Eyre at 22, hut Waugh and Gavey were still together at the close of play, the former having 20 against Ins name and the latter 31. The total was then standing at 171 for four wickets, Y.M.C.A. losing their chance of defeating the champions by their slow start. _ The detailed scores are : PALMERSTON. First Innings. R. J. Although High School had 40 up before the opening partnership was broken, matters then ran badly with them for a time, six wicketsbeing down for 89, hut Lynch and Stuckey added 44 runs for the succeeding partnership. Stewart stayed long enough to see Stuckey steadily advance the total to 154 and with the last man in the interest grew as the score crept on towards Y.M.C.A. s total. However, with only three runs required to give High School the vietory, Hatch got a ball past Stuckey, the' outgoing batsman having played a vigorous innings for .his 45. Although Y.M.C.A. entered upon their second strike, they reversed the order of batting and when time sounded had lost six wickets for 75 runs, the game being thus decided on the first innings.
