THE SINGAPORE BASE. “The chief reason for my visit is to Bee the naval base,” said Sir Leslie Wilson, Governor of Queensland, when he arrived at Singapore last month. He said that he dicl not expect to have official interviews. He admitted that he was keenly interested in defences in the Far East, particularly at Darwin, and in the compulsory service in the Netherlands Indies. Hs said that be did not think that an enemy would attempt to penetrate the Barrier Reef, but would strike at towns in the south. At the same time, he had no sympathy with . the proposal that the Singapore base should be transferred to Newcastle. Australia placed great confidence in Singapore in Die event of trouble.
