HAWKE CUP CHALLENGES. The Hawke’s Bay cricket team, together with several supporters, who had been unsuccessful in their challenge for the Hawke Cup, left for home yesterday being farewelled at the local station by Messrs A. M. Ongley (president), R. A. Brace (secretary) and E. D. Weir (member) on behalf of the Manawatu Cricket Association. I. he o-iime had been expected to extend to three days, but the collapse in the hatting bv both teams resulted in the fixture closing on the second day, which enabled the visitors to leave for home earlier than had been anticipated. In connection with the past challenge, R. J. Hatch, who scored 86 in Alanawatu’s first innings, and who captured four wickets at a cost of 12 runs apiece on a wicket which favoured the spin rather than the fast bowler, has been awarded Air E. Houlihan’s trophy for the best all-round performance in the match Since winning the trophy from Taranaki at Christmas, Afanawatu has defended the trophy twice —against Poverty Bay (when the weather conditions necessitated the abandonment of the game after the first day) and Hawke’s Bay. Four challenges have beer, lodged with the New Zealand Cricket Council. AVanganui, Waikato, Alarlborough and Southland being the four associations desirous of being given the opportunity to play for the trophy. It is customary for the holders of the trophy to he called on to play a maximum of five challenges and, should Manawatu continue to hold the handsome cup, it is doubtful whether all four challenges now lodged will be met. Afeantime the order of the challenges has not been announced by the governing authorities. TO-MORROAV’S MATCHES. Umpires appointed for to-morrow’s cricket matches are as follow : Seniors. —United v.
