MANAAVATU’S CLOSE TOURNEY. The Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s dose tournament, which is restricted to players from clut>s affiliated with the governing body, will be entered upon at the Linton Street courts to-morrow and will be continued on Anniversary Daly. There will be 14 courts available .and with record entries difficulty may be experienced in completing the tournament in the two days available. NORTH ISLAND TOURNEY. Per Press Association. WAIPAWA, Jan. 17. The third day’s play in the North Island lawn tennis championship brought the first round of the championship events to a finish at Waipawa to-day and the tournament is now well through the second round into the third round. Ideal weather conditions prevailed. Charters, the present North Island champion, and Miss Nicholls, ex-Do-minion champion, have reached the fourth round of the combined doubles and should prove hard to beat in the finals this evening. Dickie, Pearce, and Charters all survived the second round without difficulty. The Dickie Brothers were eliminated from the men’s doubles in the second round, being beaten by Ormond and Ritchie, who are playing

steady tennis. It is expected that the championship events will finish on Saturday, but the handicap events will probably end on Monday or Tuesday. In the first round of the women’s singles, Miss D. Haggitt Palmerston North) beat Mrs Toop, 6 —o, 6—l. In the second round of the women’s doubles Misses Haggitt and Macassey beat Misses Plummer and Hunter, 6 —3, 7- —5; in the third round they lost to Misses Nicholls and Howe, o—6,0 —6, I—6. In the first round of the women’s handicap doubles, Misses Taylor and Astle (Palmerston North) beat Misses Reeves and McHardy, 9 —5. WILDING SHIELD. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 17. A. R. Cant replaces T. Rhodes-Wil-liams, who is unable to make the trip, in the Canterbury Wilding Shield team to play Wellington. The other members of the team are C. Angas, H. A. Barnett and H. Dymond.
