MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

PROBATION IMPOSED. Appearing before Messrs J. H. Stevens and J. T. Bosworth, J.P.’s, at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, a man aged 29 years, whose name was suppressed, was charged that, on December 24, at Palmerston North, with intent to defraud he had obtained from N. S. Harman a hat valued at £1 9s Gd, and the sum of £6 15s 6d in money "by means of a valueless cheque. Accused elected to be dealt with summarily ai?d pleaded guilty. Senior-Detective Quirke said that accused was really a first offender on a charge of dishonesty, although he had previously been fined for a breach of the Gaming Act. Mr Quirke recommended that accused be admitted to probation for a period of 12 months, the amount involved to be refunded. The Bench decided to adopt the suggestion and accused was accordingly admitted to probation for a period of 12 months, while an order was made for the return of the money when accused secured employment. An order was also made for suppression of accused’s name.
