DRAINAGE WORKS

MAKERUA BOARD MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board was held to-day, when Trustee H. Seifert presided. Others present were Trustees J. D. Aitchison, W. Jackson, E. E. Mabin, G. Larsen, AY. J. Ross and T. D. Lynch. The Horowhenua County Council, in reply to an enquiry by the board, stated that it had not been the practice ot the council to pay cycle allowance to relief workers. It was mentioned that tho request of the Shannon Unemployment Committee had been referred to the engineer for such action as ho deemed necessary. The chairman mentioned that the Shannon Unemployment Committee’s application to the board had been for an allowance of Is 6d per week for ea.ch c-clist provided he was required to proceed over one mile from the Shannon post office.—The matter was considered, but n<j action was taken in the meantime. FINANCIAL STATEMENT. A financial statement, which included the following figures, was presented by the clerk (Mr N. 1. Nielsen). Intersecting channel loan, er. £9B l’Js; pumping plant loan, dr. £315; general account, dr. £4773 11s 3d ; No. 6 scheme wages, £227 IDs 3d; drain maintenance, £26 11s 2d; river maintenance, £63 12s Gd; pumping plant expenses, £2l 2s 2d ; salaries, printing of debentures, £4Ol Is 7d; less lodgments, £IOOB 12s Id; No. 5 scheme wages refunded. £llß Os 3d; rates, 1934 35, £583 19s 2d ; rates, 1933-34, £252 9s 2d ; rates, 1932-33, £2 2s 2d; sundry, £o2 Is 4d. No. 5 scheme wages refundable by the Unemployment Board, £137 18s 9d; arrears of rates unpaid, 1933-34, £652 7s sd, 1932-33, £BS 15s.—Adopted. Mr B. A. Norman advised that he had completed the work of cleaning the top end (27 chains) of Seifert s Drain. —Received, the clerk mentioning that he had requested the overseer to inspect the job. The chairman and Trustees Mabm and Ross were authorised to consider the quotations for a tractor which had been received and to report back to the next meeting. Air Jackson reported that there was serious erosion developing at Hume’s bend, which threatened to become worse than at Coley’s bend. It appeared to be due to an accumulation of timber in the river, which was diverting the river into a soft sandbank. The members agreed to inspect the locality on Tuesday next. Mr Ross mentioned that as. a result of the dry weather the packing . was breaking away from the AVhitanui and Poplar floodgates and he suggested that the board have a coating of tar applied. The speaker was deputed to have the work carried out.
