HOROWHENUA
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, Jan. 14. An inquest was held yesterday on the remains of Joseph Cavtmer, who was found drowned in the Otaki River. The evidence showed that the deceased was in the act of crossing, but whether lie was washed off his feet or had a heart attack is not known. A verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned. The funeral took place on Monday, when the cortege was a representative one. Rev. \V. H Carroll was the officiating minister. A bowling gala day was held at Otaki at the week-end, when an Otaki rink won the prizes. Several rinks were present from Wellington. Playing on the local croquet green for the Brandon Rose Bowl, Mrs Cobb beat Mrs Gillespie, 26—17; for the Richard Cup Mrs Hagan beat Mrs Southgate. 26—14; while for the Byron Brown Trophy Mrs Hagan beat Mrs Shaw, 26—19. Mr G. R. Symonds, ganger, lias received well-earned promotion, being appointed inspector of permanent ways. Fie will be stationed at Rangiora and leaves for the south in the course of a few days’ time. Mr Symonds will carry with him the best wishes of his many friends.
