NEW BRITISH RECORD. Received December 1, 9.55 a.m. LONDON, Nov. 30. The Flying Scotsman established a British railway record, travelling .from King’s Cross to Leeds, 186 miles, in 2 hours 31 minutes at an average speed of 75 miles per hour and a maximum of 94$ miles an hour. _ During the return journey the train attained 97$ miles an hour, Britain s greatest passenger tram speed, the average speed was lower. .... The trip was undertaken to test the steam train against the Diesel engine “Hamburg Flier,” which did a trip of 178 miles to Berlin m 2 hours 18 minutes. The London and North-Eastern Comnany officials claim it proved that the steam engine beat the German oilburner, considering the latter’s run on a flat track, while the London-Leeds lino has gradients up to 1 in 100 with severe speed restrictions m some places.
