BEEF FROM AUSTRALIA
REGULATION OF EXPORTS TO BRITAIN. EARLY STEP ANTICIPATED. VIEWS OF MARKETING AUTHORITIES. (United Press Association—Bv Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 21, 12.25 p.m. CANBERRA, Nov. 21. The early regulation of exports of beef, boneless beef and veal to Britain is anticipated. Referring to a meeting of the Commonwealth Meat Advisory Committee, Dr Earle Page, Deputy-Premier, said hopes were entertained for an agreement to suit all parties. Although opposed to restriction in any form, tlie meeting had expressed satisfaction at the Government’s handling of the negotiations, and this aspect of the proposal had been emphasised in the cable discussions with the British authorities. A temporary suspension of exports, say marketing authorities, would not curtail killing operations—it would simply mean an increase in the quantities of beef for cold storage, which would later find an overseas outlet. MEAT REGULATION. AUSTRALIA’S PROPOSAL ? An attack made by the Premier of Queensland, Mr Forgan Smith, upon the Dominions Secretary, Mr J. H. Thomas, has greatly displeased British Government circles (says a London message). It is claimed that the idea of the suspension of meat exports was Australia’s own. The outburst is considered as being due to Mr Forgan Smith discovering the baselessness of his statement in England that lie had “succeeded in getting the British Government to abandon restriction of Australian meat exports.” The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Elliot, told the Sydney Sun representative: “The proposal for two months’ suspension of beef and pork shipments emanated from the Australian Government. Our proposals for regulation, only, were submitted much earlier.” The British representatives still believe that the two months’ suspension will operate.
