BRITAIN’S REPLY
IN SHIPPING CRISIS. BUILDING MORE VESSELS. ORDERS TOTAL £10,000,000 FOR YEAR. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received November 20, 8.5 a.m. LONDON, Nov. 19. The Daily Express says that shipowners are faced with the most terrific competition in maritime history and are ordering more new ships for Empire routes than ever. Forty-two passenger and cargo vessels, modelled on the latest designs, are on the stocks in British yards and orders for twelve more are likely to be placed before March.
Orders placed in the past year mean £10,000,000 for British shipbuilders and work for 50,000 artisans. These facts mean that the shipowners have concluded that this is the only method of fighting further, inroads by foreign-owned vessels.
