SCHOOL COMMITTEES

MONTHLY MEETINGS HELD. COLLEGE STREET SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the College Street School Committee was held last evening. Those present were Colonel J. H. Whyte (chairman), Messrs C. L. Turnbull, AV. E. Cutler, A. D. H. AVorboys, H. Christmas, D. G. Pearson, H. G. Mills and. E. Persson (secretary). Arising from a previous suggestion by the ladies’ committee, the committee briefly discussed the provision of an honours board on which the names of those who had been judged dux of the school in its earlier years would be inscribed.

Tho headmaster (Mr W. A. Swinbourn) submitted a report in which he said that the first record, of a dux of the school was in 1906. There was Lben a period of some years when evidently no dux prize had been awarded’. In subsequent years there were gaps. The continuity of awards began at 1927.

Tho chairman commented that the school had been started in 1893 and there had not been a dux recognised until 1906. Tho best action the committee could take was to have an honours board made to record the names of all those shown as being dux from that time onward.

On the motion of Mr Cutler, seconded by Mr Pearson, it was decided to follow that course. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to the Charity. Ball Committee, thanking them for a rebate of £2 allowed on the charge for the use of tho decorations on the occasion of the annual school ball.

The headmaster reported that the roll stood at 477, the attendance in the last week- being 439. The school had been visited by Mr H. H. Lock, chairman of the central executive of the Royal Life-Saving Society, London, wiio had addressed the pupils; also by Mr E. H. Lange, agricultural instructor. Misses Landers and llawson, teachers, had been absent through sickness and Mr Turnbull on account of his attendance at university examinations. The proficiency examinations would be held on November 27 and the third term examinations were about to begin. The senior team had won the girls’ baseball rounders competition for the season. Stanley Thornton had been the winner of the Ivia Toa Cup for the outstanding Rugby player at the school in the past season. —The report was received. - A word of commendation was paid the caretaker (Air H. Gush) by the chairman, who said the lawns had been very well kept and the gardens at the new school had all been dug in the past month. It was decided that a new mower be purchased for his use, a stipulation being made that it is to be of British manufacture. The matter was left in the hands of Air Christmas to finalise.

Spencer) reported that the baths had been opened on October 20, the attendance being good and steadily increasing. The total cash takings up to Sunday were £l2 6s fld. The pool had been flooded fortnightly, but in future this would occur weekly. Fifteen boxes of animal plants had been donated by Mr W. V. lvingsbeer and had been bedded out. These would result in a very choice display of blooms. An anonymous donor had given a box of stocks, while Mr Richardson had given a rake and a quantity of oil. Mr McEwen concluded by thanking: the committee for promptly supplying first-aid equipment as requested, and suggested that arrangements be made to keep down the grass in the school grounds during the Christmas vacation. In regard to this request, the committee decided to do the work themselves owing to there being no funds available to pay wages. A generous cash donation to the school funds was received from the Milson Women’s Institute, and the secretary was instructed to write conveying the thanks of the committee. Members voiced their appreciation of the work of the mem-

bers of the institute, in having on many occasions raised funds to assist the school committee. The chairman advised that Mr M. Woods had donated a lamb to the committee for disposal, and a competition is to be conducted. A motion of thanks to Mr Woods for his generosity was unanimously passed. The matter of holding a breaking-up ceremony at tbo close of the school year came up for discussion, and the arranging of a suitable function was left in the hands of the chairman, to act in conjunction with the teachers. Accounts amounting to £6 17s lid were passed for payment.. The headmaster reported that one of the cupboards in his room was found broken open and the lock damaged a few days ago. As far as could be ascertained the contents were intact.
