FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”) L. J. Ellis’s nine winning rides at the C.J.C. carnival places him well clear of the “field.” The two Palmerston North horsemen, W. J. Broughton and L. H. Jones, wound up the Iticcarton meeting with a win apiece on Saturday. Synagogue was considered a certainty for the Stonyhurst Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, win-backers being prepared to accept short odds. The much-boomed Silver Coat, like Symcony and Silvor Sail, found that he could not carry to victory the poundage the handieapper accorded him when opposing the Pioneer Handicap candidates. However, ho was probably short of a race. L. G. Morris and Vintage made an excellent combination in the Metropolitan Handicap, the topwoight carrying his 9.0 to victory very comfortably. Vintage quite “buried” the opposition for speed in the final stages. Apart from the winning sequence of Sporting Blood, Sam Smith, proved to be one of the most consistent performers at the C.J.C. meeting, and his win in the final event on Saturday was due, if n6t overdue.

Maroha, who finished strongly in the Seymour Handicap at Riccarton on Satur-. day to beat Colossian for second place, is by the Martian horse Martarma, a Great Northern Derby winner, his dam Wimple being by Liinond from Veil. His breeding has much to attract attention to him, although ho has still to win his first race. While he has never reached the heights expected of him, Tout le Monde is not an easy horse for a lightweight to ride. Reverting to hack company at Riccarton on Saturday, his poundage of 8.8 enabled A. E. Ellis to be secured for him and in running a close second to Hunting Go, Tout -le Monde ran his best race tor a long timo past. Red Boa, who had won tho Epsom Handicap at Ricacrton on the second day, found the pace too fast for him in the Members’ Handicap on Saturday. However, he is getting on in years, being now 10 years old, but like his brother Baldowa (a Thompson Handicap winner) ho is a hardy sort. This season he has had four wins, making a total of 20 in 112 starts during his active career.

Round Up registered something in the nature of a mild surprise when he scored in tho Pioneer Handicap. Last year his brother, Bodyline, ran third in the same event. If. marked Round Up’s first success under silk, and it will not be his last.

Sunny Downs is reported from tho north to be showing promise on the tracks at' T.e Rapa. She is due to compete at the Waikato Club’s meeting, but may require a race or two.

Polly Douglas, who is by Nigger Minstrel from . that one-time well-known Taranaki performer, Pouma, is to make her debut under silk at the Waikato meeting. She is stated to be making good progress in her preparation. In England the Racecourse Betting Control Board is again making a contribution from the totalisator to horse breeding. This year it is supporting tho premium stallion scheme to the extent of £2OOO.

The finishing effort of the maiden On Parade on the first day of the Avondale meeting is drawing attention to his immediate prospects. On that occasion he came from last in a largo field to be close on the heels of the leading division. Last month a man of 75 years applied to the Illinois Racing Commission for a jockey’s license. His weight was 7.4. However, the Commission considered him to be a trifle old for the role, but compromised by granting him a trainer’s license. The trustees of the estate of the late Mr H. M. Reeves have sold the yearling colt by Philamor from Rapina (half-sister to Rapine) and he is booked for Australia. The price has not been disclosed, further than a statement that it was much higher than the 180 guineas paid for his brother, who realised that price at Trentham in January. , Paganelli, who was turned out early last season after going amiss, retui-ned to tho tracks on Thursday morning, and apparently is to be given another opportunity of reinstating himself. He is bearing a particularly healthy appearance, but it remains to be seen whether the leg that caused his retirement last season will stand a preparation. All going well with the old fellow there should be further days of use-
