REFERENCE AT BOARD MEETING.
PAYING THE BILL.
Reference to the decision was made at the monthly meeting of tlie Mana-watu-Oroua Power Board this afternoon, when the chairman (Mr C. G C. Dernier) intimated that advice had been received by the board’s solicitor to the effect that the Palmerston North City Council had obtained a special injunction against the imposition of the special rate. The judgment was fairly lengthy (it occupies 25 closely typed foolscap pages), but no further particulars were available. Mr M. A. Eliott: Does that mean that the board accepts the judgment, or is it intended to go further? The chairman: Until we receive it, it is impossible to proceed further. Mr Eliott: Except to pay the bill.
The chairman: We cannot express any opinion as to what may happen in the future. Mr Eliott: Whatever happens, the bill will have to. be paid. The chairman: Yes.
All* N. Campbell: The Palmerston North ratepayers will pay the bill. I think we will get a cheque from them for £9OO for the uniform rate. Palmerston North representatives on the board intimated that that payment had never been disputed.
Country members voiced in unison a difference of opinion with the city on this aspect. All* J. A. Nash, ALP- : That is not quite fair to me. I said that Palmerston North would pay with other districts its share of the uniform rate. The chairman: There can be no question but that Palmerston North appealed against the general rafe. All* Nash: They were forced to do so. The discussion was not carried further. Air P. G. Guy counselling members to “leave if alone.”
