CRICKET

PERFECT PLAYING CONDITIONS. PALMERSTON TAKE THE LEAD. Perfect playing conditions were offering on Saturday for the continuation of tlie cricket matches which had opened the previous week, while the wickets were playing appreciably faster —the lower one an the oval at the Sportsground being particularly so. Palmerston, last year’s champions, emerged from the day’s activities with a threepoint win over City Council, Leet playing an excellent innings of 83 for them, and they remain the only senior team which has not tasted defeat. On the lower wicket, Old Boys found their task of equalling United’s effort of the first day far beyond them; indeed the latter eleven were on the high road to securing a four-point win when play ceased. At the High School ground, Y.M.C.A., who had wrested the advantage over High School on the opening day, maintained it to register a fourpoint win.

PALMERSTON v. CITY COUNCIL

With two wickets down for the loss of 56 runs in reply to City Council’s first innings contribution of 127, Palmerston continued with M. A. Ongley and A. McVicar, the former haying been not out at stumps the previous week with 21 to his credit. However, before the pair could settle down McVicar was ruled out J.b.w., while Mullins entered only to lose Ongley, who also got his leg in front of a ball. With four wickots down for 75 runs, City Council appeared to be holding a promising position, but the partnership between Mullins and A. M. Ongley advanced the total to 100, while the succeeding partnership between Ongley and Leet saw the 174 mark passed before a separation was effected, the veteran being run out after contributing a valuable 37. Leet continued to add runs and he had placed 83 to his credit when he lifted a ball from Davidson to Eyro at Jong-on, the fieldsman making no mistake. His tbtal included 14 fours. The closure was then taken with the total standing at 226 for the loss of seven wickets, Pegden being unbeaten with 11 to his credit. What hopes Palmerston might have entertained of forcing a four-point win were shattered when Olliver and C. McVicar, the opening pair for City Council, compiled "82 for the first wicket, McVicar being caught short of his crease at 27. Olliver was finally beaten at 64. In one over he played merrily with the bowling, registering five fours, one six, and a single from seven balls. Wickets then commenced to fall cheaply, but the deficit had been wiped off at the cost of five wickets when time was called. Detailed scores are as under: PALMERSTON. Robertson, b C. With the big task of compiling 306 to register a victory over United, Old Boys, who had 10 runs to their credit without the loss of a wicket at the cessation of play on the opening day, continued their strike on Saturday with Cottier and Glover. However, 10 runs later Glover snicked a ball from Cookery into the safe hands of A. Cutler in the slips, while J. Gallichan entered only to be immediately sent back with his account unopened. N. Gallichan played a dashing innings for 53, but impetuosity led to his being clean bowled by Cutler, the batsman ha-ving opened his shoulders up to a ball with which he failed to connect. His total included six fours and two sixes and, good though it was, the strike might have been much better with greater restraint exercised. Thereafter wickets fell at short intervals, although Cottier continued to hold his end up until he was unfortunate enough to be run out after he had played solidly for his 42 runs. Waldegrave and Dredge added 39 for the ninth wicket, but, with McMillan an absentee, the innings then closed with Old Boys in arrears to the extent of 141 runs. Following on, Old Boys made another rather indifferent showing, the only bright feature being O’Keefe’s 66, and when time was called they had lost five wickets for 124 runs. United thus enjoyed a three-point win. Detailed scores are as under: — UNITED. First Innings 305 OLD BOYS. First Innings. Cottier, run out 42 Glover, c A. Cutler, b Cookery ... 13 J. HIGH SCHOOL v. Y.M.C.A. The close of play on the opening dav in the match between High School and Y.M.C.A. found the latter eleven holding the advantage, having compiled 169 for the loss of seven wickets in reply to High School s 146. Strutbers, who had been not out witu 69, and Collis continued their innings on Saturday, the former being nicely caught by Hearsey in the longfield when trying a big hit after carrying his total to 79. Collis was unbeaten with 11 to his credit; the two other batsmen added 18 between them, and the innings closed for 210. High School took their Second strike facing a deficit of 64 on the first innings, but made an unpromising start when Hearsey was dismissed withoiit opening their scoring account. 1 ollitt made a useful stand for 37, but none of the other batsmen remained long at tlie wickets ■ until the taileners, Edwards and Stewart, began to make some very desirable additions to the total. Stewart compiled 24 before he was dismissed by a fine catch by Trow, and Edwards made 13 not out, the innings closing for 147. A feature of the innings was that three of the first four wickets taken fell to I.b.w. decisions off Howard’s bowling. Requiring 84 for a four-point win, Y.M.C.A. went out for their second innings for Hatch and Murchison to open in good style. They had about 30 up before Murchison lost his wicket to a fast delivery by McVicar. With half an hour remaining for play, Y.M.C.A. had 60 of the. required runs, hut in attempting to force the pace both Hatch and Struthers lost their wickets, _ the former sending an easy one straight hack to the bowler, when 32. Trow had his wickets scattered by the first_ ball from Stuckey, but Allen carried on nicely, and with four wickets down for 92 Y.M.C.A. had their first senior match won easily ten minutes before stumps were drawn. Bowling for tho winners, Young took four wickets for 13 runs and Thompson three for 20 in the first innings, while Lynch took three for 13 in the second.
