INSPECTOR S. RAWLE.

APPOINTED TO PALMERSTON NORTH.

Inspector S. Rawle, who has been in charge of the New Plymouth police district since June, 1931, has received notification of his transfer to the inspectorship at the Palmerston North Police Station, succeeding Inspector Harvey who is about to retire. Inspector Itawle, who will enter upon his new duties at the close of the month, has had 35 years’ service in the force in New Zealand. He came to the Dominion at the age of 22 years and entered the Wellington depot in November, 1899 and was subsequently transferred to Dunedin. From there lie returned to Wellington in August, 1901, and remained in the Capital City till March, 1908, when he was next moved to Gisborne. Two years later he was again in Wellington, where he remained for ten years, his next appointment being to Greymouth in 1920. In the following year he went to Auckland, and in March, 1926, he was once more transferred to Wellington. His term in New Plymouth dates from June, 1931. For the first 20 years of his service Mr Itawle was engaged in the detective branch of the service, and he passed through the various grades to the rank of senior-detec-tive. In order to gain experience of the work of the uniformed branch, he was, at his own request, transferred to that section as a senior-ser-geant, though it meant a sacrifice in his remuneration. It was as a sen-ior-sergeant that he took charge of the Greymouth station, and he was also transferred to Auckland with the same rank, and undertook all the duties of a senior-sergeant, and in addition took all the prosecutions for the uniformed branch in the northern city for over four years. In December, 1924, Mr Rawle was promoted to the rank of sub-inspec-tor and given charge of the Auckland city and suburban district, and on his promotion to the rank of inspector he was again transferred to Wellington. It was while he was there at that time that the co-ordin-ated unified control was put into operation, -and upon its abandonment he was transferred to the charge of the New Plymouth district. Mr Rawle sat on the board of ex-

aminers for the department from 1926 to 1929, and again in 1933, and he was also returned unopposed in 1929 as the representative of the Police Force on the Public Service Superannuation Board. While in New Plymouth Mr Rawle organised a system of lectures for members of the staff desiring to sit for the promotion examinations. Mr Rawle lias taken an active interest in the welfare of the community, and besides his police official duties he has given time and service to the district as member of the council of the Taranaki Chamber of. Commerce, and a member of the Rotary Club.

While a member of the detective branch of the force Mr Rawle was engaged in some of the most important crime investigations in the Dominion, and during last year he was associated with Inspector J. Hollis, of Auckland, in the investigation, into the Ruawaro murders.
