Miss Jean Litchfield, whose marriage is to take place shortly, was the guest at a pleasant bridge afternoon arranged by Miss E. Moffatt, of Frederick Street, last week. The exhibition is being held by the council of the Auckland Institute and Museum and the library and art gallery committee of the Auckland City Council to demonstrate how New Zealand flora and fauna can be used in industrial design. Mr C. R. Ford, president of the Auckland Society of Arts, opened the exhibition last Wednesday afternoon. The jury of awards consists of Mr W. H. Gunner (architect), Professor C. R. Knight, of Auckland University College, and Mr W. H. Wright, of the Elam School of Art. Competitive sections, for which entries from all over New Zealand were received, were for designs for wallpaper, book decoration, woollen rugs, linoleum, wood-carving, architectural modelling of artificial stone, bricks and tiles, metalwork, pottery and porcelain, printed certificates, and decoration on any plane surface.

PLUNICET SOCIETY. Dr. Martin Tweed, of Wellington, medical adviser to the New Zealand

Plunket Society, was a visitor to Palmerston North on Friday, when he met the members of the committee of the Palmerston North branch at afternoon tea at Messrs Ciollinson and Cunningliame’s rooms. Dr. Tweed was introduced by the president, Mrs A. Coombs, and gave an interesting address on general matters connected with the work of the society. He also answered numerous questions, and was accorded a vote of thanks.

Prior to Dr. Tweed’s arrival a meeting of the committee was held, Miss McLagan being in the chair. The secretary (Mrs M. Aitchison) reported that the date suggested for the proposed children’s party would clash with the Combined Bands Queen Carnival. In view of that it was unanimously agreed that the gathering be held on the first Saturday in March and that a street appeal and an evening gathering be held as well.
