FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”)

Acsculus has been disposed o£ by Mr T. H. Lowry to a southern owner. McHeath, who accompanied Aesculus to the New Zealand Cup meeting, was disposed of earlier. Sporting Song - is reported from _ New Plymouth to have done well since racing at Bulls. He will accompany Ythan and Bay Sand to the Levin and Bedding meetings as a member of H. Dulieu’6 team.

Chief Marionette, who was originally trained at Awapuni by Mrs A. W. McDonald and more recently by J. Boyd, is now an inmate of H. Dulieu’s stable at New Plymouth. Her off foreleg, which was responsible for her breakdown two years ago, is causing her mentor corn c concern. The Podding Cup this year carries a stake of £2OO. The Flying Handicap (six furlongs) is worth £l3O, and the Kiwitea Handicap (seven furlongs) £lls, both being open events. The principal events on the second day are the St. Andrew’s Handicap (one mile and a distance), 'of £l3O, the Colyton Handicap (six furlongs), of £IOO, and the Empire Handicap (seven furlongs), of £lO5.

The Feilding Jockey Club has followed the lead of some of the other district clubs by deleting its classic race from this year’s programme. For the forthcoming meeting the Feilding Stakes has been replaced by the Juvenile Stakes (five furlongs), which has a stake of £125 attached to it. No doubt when times improve further, the club will re-instato the classic event which has brought some good performers together in the past. . The Riccarton Handicap often gives a good line to the Derby result at the C.J.C. meeting. Last year Nightly won the Riecarton Handicap with 8.0 and followed it with the Derby; while Cylinder won the Riccarton Handicap with 9.3 and then added the Derby in 1930. No doubt further search would disclose other cases. The Limond colt Theo equalled the feat of Rampion at Flemington on Saturday -when he added the Victorian Derby to his record. Rampion was the only horse, previously, to have won the A.J.C. Derby, Caulfield Guineas, and Victorian Derby. Five of his age have, how r ever, won both Derbies and the Melbourne Cup, Grand Flaneur (1880), Poseidon (1906), Prince Foote (1909), Trivalve (1927), and Hall Mark (1933). J. M. Cameron has returned to Hastings, but has left Sir Nigel and The Khedive in Auckland will most likely race them at the Takapuna meeting. Although he missed a place, Sir Nigel made a fine shoving in

the Champion Hack Plate and is likely to win at any time. The Khedive did not race at Avondale. He is a three-year-old by Chief Ruler from Egyptian Flower. The Diacquenod gelding Ballymoney had another defeat recorded against him in the Mt Albert Handicap at Avondale, and no excuses can be made for him, as the going was entirely to his liking. He showed plenty of speed in the middle stages of the race, but failed .to run on when the final test came and was a beaten horse over a furlong from home. The field opposed to Thespis in the Grey Lynn Hurdles at Avondale was very moderate and he was backed down to odds on. The issue was never in doubt, as he went to the front at the start, and, jumping in good style, was never headed. Thespis had been schooling and galloping well at Ellerslie prior to the meeting and 1 ' is just about at the top of his form again. The late A. H. Eastwood, who died from injuries received this week in a race at Riccarton, served an apprenticeship with the Riccarton trainer, H. Nurse. He had been riding for a number of years and was recognised as one of the leading lightweight jockeys in the Dominion. His first success in the New Zealand Cup was on Chido in 1929 and his subsequent success was on Fast Passage in 1932. He was fifth on the winning jockeys’ list last season with 51 successes; and ho also rode 47 _ winners in the previous season. One of his most recent important winning rides was on Grand Sport when that horse won the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday last.
