POPULATION OF DOMINION.

THE LATEST ESTIMATE

INCREASE IN SEPTEMBER

The population Maoris) of New Zealand proper on September 30 last was estimated by the Government Statistician at 1,551,785 —790,887 males and 760,898 females. The total population of the Dominion, its deiienuencies, and the mandated territory of Western Samoa was estimated at 1,621,751—826,943 males and 794,808 females. These figures are published in the latest issue of the New Zealand Gazette.

It is noted that, during the quarter ended September 30, last, the population showed an increase of 2830, compared with an increase of 2420 during the corresponding quarter of The European population of New Zealand proper was estimated on September 30 last at 1,478,0*0 and Maori population, 73,715 (38,330 males and 35,379 females).

In the North Island the population was estimated at 1,004,168 (516,530 males and 487,638 females), these returns including Maoris. Of the_ total 933,631 were Europeans (479,861 males, 453,7i"0 females). The South Island population, including Maoris, was put at 547,617 (274,367 males, 273,260 females). There are only 3178 Maoris in the South Island.

The population of the Cook Islands on June 30 last was estimated at 15',841 (8103 males and 7738 females), and the population of Tokelau Islands at 1179 (593 males, 586 females). The population of Western Samoa on September 30 last was estimated to be 52,946 (27,360 males, 25,586 females).
