QUEEN CARNIVAL.

To-morrow will mark the official opening of the 1934 Queen Carnival, the proceeds of which. are to bo devoted to the funds of the Garrison, City and Pipe Bands of Palmerston North. At 2.45 p.m. the three queens, escorted by their respective bands, will parade around tlie Square. At tho head of the procession will be Miss June Scott, Ithe Pipers’ queen, who will bo escorted by tho Pipe Band. On this occasion this organisation has been supplemented by the pipe bands from Wanganui and Danncvirkc and will parade 30 members strong. Next in the precession will bo tho Garrison queen. Miss Beryl Oakley, and she will be supported by the champion band of New Zealand. Tlie decorated lorry of Miss Winiata, the City Band candidate, promises to be a feature of this procession and her supporters aro going to no cud cf trouble to make this the most attractive exhibit of the clay. It is a very rare occasion on which the public of Palmerston North have the opportunity of witnessing the parade of the three musical organisations of this town, and this procession should be a fitting opening to the three weeks’ carnival activities of 1934. The' official ball, conducted by the three combined bands of the Queen Carnival, will bo staged in tho De Luxe Hall on Monday, the 12th inst. To cater for all tastes a continuous programme of alternative modern and old-time dances has been arranged. Larkin’s orchestra has been specially supplemented to cater for tho modern dance music and Loveday’s Band has been engaged to supply tho music for old-timo dancing, and this in itself should be one of tho features of tho evening and there will bo no weary waits between dances. During tlie evening the three candidates for the honour of Queen of the Carnival, namely, Miss June Scott (Pipe Band), Miss Beryl Oakley (Garrison Band), and Miss Winiata (City Band), will be officially introduced to the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs Hansford), and the' Mayor will officially declare tho carnival open. The committees arc sparing no expense to make this function a fitting opening for three weeks of revelry and dance patrons are assured of an enjoyable evening .and an opportunity of assisting a most worthy object.
