Mr G. G. Taylor, a member of the staff of the Plant Research Station at Palmerston North, is at present carrying out an investigation in Hawke’s Bay in the improvement of spray applications and spraying machines. An interesting feature in connection with orchard sprays was mentioned by Dr Cunningham, mycologist at the Plant Research Station, Palmerston North, in the course of an address to Hawke’s Bay fruit-growers. Discussing the toxic action of present-day sprays both on insects and fungi, Dr Cunningham pointed out that these sprays were also toxic in some degree to the trees to which they were applied. Because of this, considerable interest was being taken in the development of spraying materials made from plant extracts which, while fulfilling their function as insecticides and fungicides successfully, were less harmful to trees and plants. Such sprays were being used extensively experimentally, while one spray-—nicotine—-had been used for a number of years. u.s.a. wheatTiarkets. NEW YORK, Nov. 5.
