OBITUARY.

VENERABLE A. M. JOHNSON. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 3. The death of the Venerable Allan MacDonald Johnson, Archdeacon of Wellington, occurred to-day in his 64th year. Born in Madras (India), he was educated at St. Paul's School (London), Gonville, and Caius College (Cambridge), where he was a contemporary of Dr Wilson who died with Captain R. E. Scott on his way back from the South Pole. He was ordained a deacon in 1894 and a priest in 1895 in Rochester (England), and in the following year came to New Zealand, where he took the curacy of St. Peter's Church. In 1899 he became vicar iof Greytown, Featherston, and Martihborough and became vicar of Masterton six years later. In 1908 he returned to Wellington as vicar of St. Mark's Church and three years afterwards was appointed to a similar position at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral.

During the war, Mr Johnson served as chaplain to the forces of New Zealand and in 1919 became Archdeacon of Wellington. In 1929 he retired from St. Paul’s and became editor of the Church Chronicle. A keen classical and theological scholar, since 1907 he had held the position of examing chaplain to the Bishop and was secretary of the Board of Theological Studies. For many years he’ was a member of the General Synod of the Church in New Zealand, liis wife died a few weeks ago, and one son, Hugh, survives.
