ASSISTING UNEMPLOYMENT.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —A correspondent signing, himself “Commonsense,” in to-day’s Dominion, wonders why Palmerston North residents don’t try and solve their unemployment question by agitating to have the railway deviation completed—a work that was stopped some years ago without any apparent reason. As he points out, the railway running through the centre of the city is a constant danger to life, and an intolerable nuisance in holding up the traffic. This is certainly a very necessary work that will have to be completed by the Government at no distant date. Apart from the menace to life and inconvenience to the public of the trains constantly passing through the city, Palmerston North is the most important railway centre in New Zealand, and requires convenient and up-to-date facilities in handling its ever growing traffic. A great part of the deviation work is already done, and can be completed at probably half the cost estimated a few years ago, also providing employment for a large number of men, instead of wasting any more time and money on the futile and childish -work of redigging up the streets every few months. Now is the time for our Member, Mayor, Unemployment Committee and citizens in general to urge the completion of this necessary and useful work. —I am, etc., MORE COMMON SENSE.
