PAHIATUA, May 24. The chairman (Cr. A. W. Bisset) presided over the annual meeting of the Pahiatua County Council yesterday. There were also present Crs. C. Hodgins, T. Foully, Felix Bolton, F. T. Horne, F. V. Bryant, C. Lassen, H. R. Whitta and J. R. Nelson. The chairman was unanimously re-elected and an exchange of courtesies and complimentary references followed. The executive committee, comprising the chairman and Crs. Bryant and Hodgins, was re-elected. The chairman, overseer and clerk were appointed to represent the council on the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee. The clerk: “Not a very onerous job, gentlemen.” The application of the assistantclerk for an increase in salary was dealt with. This officer, in his written request, stated that he had now been ten years with the council. The chairman: “I think it is up to us to increase his salary.” After some discussion the chairman moved that the assistant’s salary be increased by £25 per a.nnum (as from May Ist). This motion was carried. It was decided that, on the approval of the Loans Board to the voting paper submitted, the chairman 'and returning officer take the necessary steps to take a poll of the ratepayers for the sanction of a. loan of £BOOO for reconstructing and surfacing No. 15 main highway. The clerk (Mr J. Hutton) mentioned that it would be six weeks before the poll could be taken. The Palmerston North Salvation Army Band participated in the Salvation Army concert held to mark the 43rd anniversary of the Pahiatua Corps, Major Miles, who was present on behalf of divisional headquarters at Palmerston North, presiding.
