THIRTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD,” MAY 24, 1904. The Hawke’s Bay County Council was preparing a by-law to regulate motor car traffic on the roads of the county. A return furnished by the Public Works Department showed that there were 2173 artisans and labourers in its employ on co-operative works. At the Addington saloyards a Darfield seller had offered the best line of fat lambs for the season, 30 Shropshires bringing 225, and 161 Shropshire cross bringing 19s 3d to 19s 9d. A prime line of half-bred wethers from the Culverden district brought 21s 9d. Unless the demand for timber improved there was a possibility of the sawmills of the Hawke’s Bay district being forced to run for less than four days a week. The first meeting had been held of the Palmerston North High School Board of Governors when it was decided that the control of the Technical School also be taken over, a committee being formed for the purpose. The staff of the District High School were appointed to the High School, the scholars’ fees for tuition at which were fixed at: —Per quarter, £3; if paid before the third week after becoming due, £2 10s. The positions of the football teams in the Hankins Shield competition at the time were as follow Palmerston, 6 points; Awahuri, 6; Old Boys, 4; Institute, 4. .... Settlers in the Himatangi district, despite the low prices for butterfat, were making extensive improvements to their properties, while about a dozen new houses had been erected within a few months. A paragraph in the “Standard’s” notes from this district reported that farmers were experiencing difficulty in securing labour for their milking operations. Arrangements had been made in Sydney for a sculling match between George Towns and Dick Tressider for the world title, the match, of £SOO a side, to be decided on the Parramatta River.
