KIWITEA COUNTY.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. Tho annual meeting of the Kiwitea County Council was held at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr L. T. McLean presiding. Also present were Crs F. E. Tappin, W. Hair, N. V. Shannon, T. D. Wood, W. P. Shaw; F. O. Stack, J. A. T. Brown and J. N. Williamson. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands,' Wellington, forwarding schedule of “thirds” accrued from Crown sections in the Kiwitea County for the half-year ended March 31, 1934, amounting to £4B 15s 2d.—Received. From the Public Works Department, regarding applications for grants for road work and advising that applications must be forwarded not later than May 25, 1934.—-Received. From the Main Highways Board, regarding annual review of main highways, and requesting the council to forward any applications to the district engineer, Public Works Department, Wellington.—Received. From tho Mayor of Palmerston ■North (Mr A. E. Mansford) requesting this council’s support to a resolution objecting to the payments being made under the sustenance system introduced in Palmerston North by the Unemployment Board. —Received, the council contending that action was not now required in view of the happenings in Palmerston North on Tuesday:

From the Commissioner of Transport, advising that as a considerable number of local authorities and other interested bodies have not yet been able to furnish their comments on the proposed amendments to tho motor regualtions, it has been decided to allow additional time in which to consider the various points involved. The writer advised that it was therefore impossible to have the new regulations gazetted in time for the forthcoming licensing period.—Received.

From the Waitomo County Council, regarding the ruling liability of the State Advances Department in regard to rate payments and thanking the council for its support in connection therewith. The writer added that the

views expressed by the various counties were considered by bis council at its last meeting, and as the majority were in favour of first approaching the executive of the New Zealand Counties’ Association before submitting a test case it was decided to adopt this course.—Received, Cr Hair remarking that it was time action was taken to test the right of- tho Crown not to make rate payments on properties owned by the Government. Every, local body was suffering through the present state of affairs, the speaker added.

From Mrs H. J. Flancox, drawing the council’s attention to tho state of the culverts in front of her property at Rangiwahia-:—-Referred to the overseer. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The county overseer, Mr F. H. loggers, reported, inter alia, oil the month’s work as follows:—“Cheltenham riding: The roadman has attened to the cleaning out of watertables and other maintenance work. The sections of main highways as well as Hayne’s Line, Beaco'nsfiekl Valley

Road and Cheltenham Cross Road have been kept in order by the power grader plant. Kiwitea riding: The, section of the No. 52 main highway has been trimmed by the grader plant; also the Upper Bonconsfiekl Valley. Watertables have been attended to and the fern cut hack on Mcßeth’s Line. Drains and watertables have received attention on tire Upper Beaconsfield Valley Road. Waituna riding: The section of tho No. 377 main, highway has been trimmed bv the power grader plant. The roadman lias attended to the usual maintenance work in his length, as well as improving sharp bends on the No. 377 main highway. Ongo riding: The contractors delivered 48 cubic yards of .metal on Waituna Valley Road. The section of the No. 377 main highway has been kept in order by the power grader plant. The

roadman lias attended to surface work and cleaning out drains and watertables; also assisting with metal carting in Peep-o-Day riding. Kimbolton riding: The usual maintenance work throughout the riding has received attention, and the roadman has nlso assisted with the filling in of ruts and cleaning out watertables in the Kiwitea riding. The main highway sections of road have been kept in fair condition by the power grader plant. Peep-o-day riding: The roadman in the eastern section of the riding lias attended to surface work, cleaning out watertables and cutting back fern and scrub on tho section of No. 52 main highway, as well as attending to similar work qn the Peep-o-Day and Hogg’s Roads. On the western section the roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work; also assisting with metal carting on Pakiliikura and Iviwi-tea-Tapuae Roads. During the month the county truck carted out 345 cubic yards of maintenance. Minor repaii work has been carried out on the clay section of the Mangapapa Road.”— Adopted. RATE STATEMENT. Mr W.
