MID-WEEK GOLF

INTER-CLUB COMPETITION. WIN FOR MANAWATU. 'The first of the series of mid-week competitions between the Manawatu and Palmerston North Golf Clubs for the Wednesday Cup took place Yesterday afternoon, Manawa'tu winning by 84 points to 19. The trophies for tii© best net round of each team were won by I>. McKenzie (Manawatu) and R. Looney (Palmerston North). The contest, which was decided on match and medal rounds played in conjunction, proved an interesting experiment and one that found favotir. The games were played on handicap, with five points awarded to each player who won his match and three to each player who beat his opponent on the medal round. When the results were posted it was found that in some cases a player who beat his opponent in match play had lost to him in the net medal round. The aggregate totals in the medal handicap were: Manawatu 940, Palmerston North 1002, Manawatu getting an additional seven points for this. Results were as follow, the Manawatu players being mentioned first in each case : A. E. Ekstedt scored five points and F. Raven three in their game. Ekstedt won on match play but lost the medal round, their net scores being 80 and 79. A. E. Guy beat J. Ramsay in both games, scoring eight points, their net rounds being 74 and 18. T. Louisson and R. Looney halved on match play, but Looney won with a net 74 and 76, getting 54 points to Louisson’s 2|. D. McKenzie beat R. French in both games, securing eight points for his team. Their medal rounds were 72—94. J. Louisson, who met A. V. Pizzey, scored in both games, their modal rounds being 75 and 80 respectively. J. P. Maule lost to H. Bennett in match play but won the medal (80 —81) getting three points to Bennett’s five. A. C. Anderson won both games against T. Simpson, scoring eight points. Their medal rounds were 83—86. J. C. Swindell halved match play against D. H. Cook but won the medal round 81 —83, taking oi points to 2£. A. Strange won his match against J. Coupe but lost the medal round, their scores being 80 —75. Strange obtained five points and Coupe three. A. Osborne-won both games against R. Vanning scoring eight x>oints, thennet medal rounds being 74 —82. G. Fairey scored eight points against E. Anstis, their net rounds being 90—98.

F. A. Cousins was successful in botli games aga.inst T. Simpson, the medal rounds being 75 —92.
