RUGBY FOOTBALL

TO-MORROW’S BIG PROGRAMME. Rugby enthusiasts will bo confronted with a big programme to-morrow, for there are three senior matches set do wn for the Showgrounds, St. Patrick’s and United supplying the early attraction on the oval: Old Boys and Massey College will follow them, while Kia Toa and YVoodville will occupy No. 2 ground at the rear of the grandstand at 3 p.m. The day will mark the first appearance locally of three of the six competing teams, supporters of United, Massey College and YVoodville not having witnessed them in action on the Showgrounds to date. United and Feilding shared the points at their meeting, but the latter team then went on to account for St. Patrick’s in no uncertain manner. However, it is by no means wise to predict that the run of form will be continued. Although Old Boys meantime lead in the competition, big things are expected from Massey College when they settle down, and considerable interest will be taken in their activities to-morrow. While Kia Toa have still to open their credit account, the double blues have gone down at each essay by only the narrowest of margins. They are hopeful that the championship points will come their way to-morrow, but they realise that they will be opposing a virile force in YY’oodville. As there is every prospect that the weather is improving, enthusiasts should have much to interest them locally. However, there will be an equal measure of interest centred in the meeting between Feilding and Feilding Old Boys at -Johnston Park, for the yellow and blacks hold the advantage on the championship table and thensupporters are hopeful that they will retain pride of place. W Donovan, of the YY annelia Club, wlro at last week’s meeting of the union was ordered to stand down until ho came before the committee for alleged striking of one of the players of the opposing side in the Otaki versus YY 7 aimeha junior match on April 28, appeared. Donovan was-allowed to return to the field at the commencement of the second spell. The meeting considered that it was sufficient punishment in this particular case that the player should have missed one match. _ . , In the match Pirates v. Nomads, the referee stood YVilliams of the latter club on the line for alleged fikliting and butting. The player, who appeared, denied the offences. In telling the player that the union had decided to stand him down for two playing Saturdays, the president pointed out that rough play, which is far too frequent, would not be tolerated and the union was determined to have it stopped. Mr Meyer waited on the committee with a view to having the decision not to allow D. Edginton of the YVainielia Club to play junior football reversed. After considering the case it was decided not to alter the previous 'decision. The Shannon Club sought to reinstate to junior T. Roach, D. Mercer, and C. Booker. Mr Richards gave the facts in each case, but only in that of the last named player was permission granted. The Tokomaru Club wrote in reference to M. Sherman, who they said

had not played for two seasons. They also pointed out that they were short of players. The request was not granted. The YVaimeha Club communicated advising that P. Parata had without a clearance left them and played for Paraparaumu. —It was decided to advise the player that this was against the rules of the union and that by playing for any other club lie would be liable for a penalty up to suspension for the rest of the season, and "also to inform the Paraparaumu Club of their action which is not in accordance with the rules. The Manawatu Union notified of tlie appointment of Messrs Eglinton and Hardio to meet representatives of the Horowhenutt Union on the question of boundaries between the two unions. A formal challenge for the Bebbington Shield was received from the Dannevirke Sub-Union. Two chibs, Shannon and Pirates, were reported to have played two players each in wrong coloured jerseys. The rules provide for a fine of 2s Gd per player and this was imposed. Mr Richards suggested that endeavours be made to arrange an annual home and home match with YVanganui, the first to be played this season at YVanganui. This was decided upon and the team will be a senior one. TE KAWAU SUB-UNION. Competition games in To Kawau for Saturday have been arranged as follow: Senior. —Oliakca v. HAMILTON, May 10. A sequel to a sensational incident in the Frankton-Horotiu senior match at Rugby Park on Saturday took place at a meeting of the management committee of the Hamilton Rugby Union, when several players were stood down as tire result of being ordered off by the referee, Mr H. Johnston, for rough play. Allegations of fighting were made by tlie referee, but were denied by the players. After a lengthy discussion and explanations tlie referee’s action was upheld. J.
