MARTON. May 2. There was a pleasing little ceremony at the scout hall last evening, when members of the Marton Troop held a special parade for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr H. J. Thompson, who lias been a member of the local committee and a keen friend of the movement for some years. Scoutmaster M. Wells presented Mr Thompson with small tokens of the Scouts' regard for him and Mrs Thompson, wishing both every, success. The shooting season opened in weather which suited the comfort of the sportsman, but was not conducive to good bags. The results were better than was generally expected and the opening cannot be regarded as other than a successful one.

The decision of the Rangitikei Rugby Union at its last meeting to recommend that the suspension of three years imposed last August on a Bulls player bo lifted has created a stir in the referees’ camp. A special meeting of the Referees’ Association was held last evening, Mr W. E. Gibbons presiding, and. there was on the table a resignation from Mr J. H. Dashwood, the referee who had ordered the player concerned off the field. It was eventually decided that a committee of three from each body confer on the question and report back. Mr L. Hammond was appointed an independent chairman. „ „ MARTON, May 3. The monthly meeting of the Rangitikei County Council was held to-day, Cr. W. Doole presiding. Crs. R. G. Dalziell, J. McHardy, J. Brice, J. D. Lilburn, H. A. Belk and A. Stuart were also present. With reference to the small bird nuisance it was agreed to vote £3O for the purchase of poisoned grain. A tender of £2224 10s for reconstruction and metalling Bulls-Turakina main highway was accepted. The Waitotara County Council wrote asking if the council would join in procuring wholesale supplies of sodium chlorate for the destruction of ragwort and it was decided to fall in with the scheme and advise as to quantity to be ordered. The Hawke’s Bay County Council recommended that further representations be made to the Main Highways Board to have the Taihape-Napier road declared a main highway and it was decided to renew the application. The Hunterville branch of the Farmers’ Union made a request to the council to declare variegated thistle a noxious weed.—Held over. The Waiapu County Council asked the council to send a delegate to the conference on native rating to be held at Rotorua on May 30 and the matter was left in the hands of the clerk with power to act. Tho financial statement showed that tho credit balance after the last meeting was £21,738 19s 3d, receipts during the month totalled £ll3O 2s 5d and payments reduced the balance to £18,160 Is 7d. At the conclusion of the County Council meeting, councillors and the staff gathered to extend best wishes to Mr F. L. Nicol on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The chairman (Mr W. Doole) presented Mr Nicol with a canteen of cutlery as a token of esteem.

A large and representative gathering of Marton residents assembled on Wednesday evening to bid farewell and to express their appreciation of the services rendered by Constable IT. J. Thompson and Mrs Thompson on the eve of their departure for Lumsden, to which district Constable Thompson goes on promotion. Mr J. A. Bush, chairman of the Marton Chamber of Commerce, presided. A number of toasts -were honoured and Constable Thompson was presented with a wallet of notes.
