GOLF IN BRITAIN.
A GREAT SURPRISE. Received May 4 1.20 p.m. LONDON, May 3. In the Dunlop golf tournament 69 players with aggregates of 154 or under qualified for the final two rounds. Padgham is leading with 140, from Lacey, 142; Rudd, Mitchell, Branch, McDowall, 143; Cotton and Ayton, 144. The others include It. Whitcombe, 145; Compston, C. Wliitcombe, Hodson, Brewe, 146; E. Whitcombe, 147; Havers, Easterbrook, 148; Seymour, 149; Alliss, 150; Boomer, King .and Davies, 153. To-day’s play at Southport produced a great surprise. Cotton on Wednesday was quite out of the running, but to-day Cotton and Ayton, the 50-year-old Scotsman, formerly prominent at St. Andrew’s first as an amateur and then as a professional, playing together, each had a round of 66, breaking the record for the 6800 yard course. Ayton took only 25 putts and Cotton 26. NEW ZEALAND LADIES. The Ladies’ Golf Union told the Sun that the entries of Misses Oliver Kay and Bessie Gaisford (New Zealand) had been accepted in the British ladies’ championship.
