TELEGRAPH CHARGES
PROTEST FROM DUNEDIN. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, April 17. The Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution protesting against the new scale of telegraphic charges, and urging that in future where there was no matter of urgency the business community should be given an opportunity of making recommendations in connection with charges that so vitally affected it. Reporting at a meeting of Dunedin manufacturers on the measures that had been taken to have a protest recorded against the increased charges for telegrams, the chairman, Mr James Hogg, stated that 90 per cent, of the telegrams went over 100 miles, and the rates for these had been increased to Is 2d and Is 3d. In view of the statement of the Minister that extra revenue was not required, it was difficult to see why this extra loading should be placed on business houses. If it had been desired to popularise the service telegrams at 6d could still have been introduced. It was decided to confirm the action of the executive in co-operating with the Chamber of Commerce in making a protest. '
