PRINCE GEORGE’S TOUR.
MEETING WITH SOUTH AFRICAN CHIEFS. PICTURESQUE SCENES. Although East London (South Africa) gave Prince George a wonderful reception, it was earlier, at King William’s Town, that the main interest lay, as there His Royal Highness met seven native Chiefs representing some 600,000 tribesmen of the Ciskei Territory. He was heralded by a kaross-robed ancient, who sang his praises in traditional style, drawing attention to the whiteness of the Prince’s naval uniform, with its left sleeve banded with black in mourning for King Albert. The Chiefs and other supporters then greeted the Prince as Ngangendlovu, “Thou Mighty Elephant.” They were headed by Chief Sandile, great-grandson of the famous Sandile, who 56 years ago made his last stand against white invasion. While leading the Gaikas he was killed on the Amatola hills, which were pointed out to tire Prince as he motored through the town. Another link with the past was Colonel J. L. Brownlee, great-grand-son of Rev. John Brownlee,_ who 100 years ago arrived at the Buffalo River with a Bible and the hope of winning over the native population from barbarism. Since then the Ciskei has journeyed far towards Western civilisation' and Christianity. The Prince gave to each Chief a sil-ver-topped walking-stick bearing his monogram, and received a small oxhide shield, two assegais, and some skilfully wrought beaded ornaments.
