ANTARCTIC VIGIL.
BYRD WORRIES SPONSOR. NEW YORK, April 6. Mr Jacob Ruppert, one of the principal backers of the Antarctic expedition, after a discussion of conditions with Commander Gjortson, radioed Rear-Admiral Byrd urging him to abandon his plan to occupy the_ advanco post through the winter night. “I am very much worried about your personal safety and earnestly urge you to returu to the base,” he said. , The first question Mr Ruppert asked Commander Gjertson was : “Why is Byrd going down there all by himself?” The commander responded : “I don’t know, but the hut would have been a tio-ht fit for two men.” He explained that it had been the original plan to have two men to undertake the of>starvations, but th.o delay caused bv difficulties in landing supplies had made this impossible.
