GARRISON BAND.
VISIT TO WANGANUI. Coincident with the visit of the Garrison Band to V anganui as evening, when a concert was given in the Regent Theatre, a presentation was made to Lieutenant E. Webb, conductor of the Queen Alexandra s Own Band (Wanganui) from tho members of the visiting band in appreciation of his services in assisting at tlie contest held in Wellington. The presentation was made by the president of the Garrison Band, Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., who expressed the gratitude of the members to Lieutenant Webb. In reporting the concert the Wanganui Chronicle termed it as “most delightful,” and continued to state: The Palmerston combination was in very fine form, particularly in the selection “Nabucca,” by Verdi. The tone was quiet and very sweet and was heard to pleasing effect in the hymn, “Pax Dei.” Other numbers were “Mephistopheles” (march), “Martha” (overture) and “The Elephant (march). Several Palmerston North artists accompanied the hand and contributed to the programme. Miss Thomson (Palmerston North), soprano, sang two beautiful numbers, “Springtime Reminds Me of You,” and “Goodbye,” and, with her brother, sang two ducts, “Home to Our Mountains,” and “Little Green Valley.” The audience was greatly delighted with these two numbers and insisted on hearing more, requests that were gladlv acceded to. Messrs F. Gedson (xylophone) and I. Speight (piano) played several sprightly numbers that so appealed to the audience that tire pliayers could hardly leave the stage. Lieutenant V r ebb and Mr G. Bergersen were heard in a very pleasing cornet duet, which was one of the items of the evening. Mr Toon, of Palmerston North (baritone), sang a number of sentimental ballads, which gave his fine voice the scope it needed to be heard to full effect. In every way the concert was a success and the very large audience enjoyed every item. It is the intention of the Queen Alexandra’s Own Band to return the compliment by visiting Palmerston North on Sunday next.
