MARKETING BOARD’S FUNDS.
SUGGESTION FOR USE,
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 7. Commenting at a recent meeting of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research on the effect of the cessation of the Empire Marketing Board’s grants, the chairman (Mr G. Sliirtcliffe) said it would seem that the available funds should be conserved for the purpose of maintaining such fundamental researches as play an allimportant part in the development of the Dominion’s natural resources. In this class would be placed plant research, soil survey, and animal health and nutrition. On the other hand researoh. which. was don© for particular industries should be financed for the most part by the industries themselves, viz., dairy, fruit, wheat, leather, gold, Referring to the desirability of modifying the policies in the various research activities as the circumstances of time warrant, Mr Shirtcliffe remarked that in primary products quantitative expansion seemed at present to require halting and energies directed towards improvement in quality.
