A BIG BILL.
COST OF CHIMNEY REPAIRS. ABATTOIR STACK STRENGTHENED. From information now available, it appears that the repair bill for chimneys damaged in Palmerston North bv the midnight earthquake of March 5 will exceed £SOOO. Notifications have been received by the City Council from 850 dwellings, including 78 in Ferguson Street, where repairs are required. These involve well over 2000 chimneys. Authorised recently at an estimated cost of £l5O, repairs have been made to the damaged chimney stack at the municipal abattoirs at Awapuni. Broken joints twenty feet froip. the top have been repaired. Vertical steel bands and additional horizontal steel bands have been fitted to' strengthen the tall stack.
