GARDEN CIRCLE
ACTIVITIES OF THE YEAR. The annual meeting of the Palmerston North Garden Circle was held last evening, Mr A. W. Just presiding. There was an attendance of 24. The rejxirt outlined the activities of the year, stating that lectures had been given as follow:—December, “Roses,” by Mr F. Mason; February, “Dahlias,” by Mr A. J. Shailer; March, “Gladioli,” by Mr L. J. Morino; March, “Carnations,” by Mr H. V. Mountfort; April, “Chrysanthemums,” by Mr AV. Grey; May, “Lawns,” by Mr J. J. Stevenson; June, “Flowering Shrubs,” by Mr A. AV. Just; July, “Suttons,” Mr A. J. Anderson; August, “Garden Hygiene,” by Mr J. O. Neill, B.Sc. ; September, “Insects and Flowers,” Mr D. S. Robinson; October, “Some Botanic Gardens,” Dr H. H. Allan; December, “Hybridisation,” Dr C. Yeates. The winner of the crystal vase, for which competitions had been held, had been Mr H. H. Silson, with Mr C. AV. Erenstrom runner-up. Mr A. AA 7 . Just had generously donated a trophy for 1934. The committee had been fortunate in being able to arrange meeting place free of charge. The lecfures had been most instructive and thanks were clue to the gentlemen who had assisted in that direction. Both the president (Mr F. J. Nathan) and vice-president (Mr P. Black) had been taken seriously ill in the course of the year, and it was pleasing to report that both were now much improved in health. It was also fitting that the Garden Circle should wish Mr and Mrs Black a pleasant trip to Great Britain and that they would both benefit considerably by it. It was pleasing also to report the speedy recovery of Mr J. Galland after his serious illness. The adoption of the report was proposed by Mr J. B. Speedy, Mr D. S. Robinson being the seconder. The motion was carried. The statement of accounts showed that the year had closed with a debit of 3s sd. Mr J. J. Stevenson, the treasurer, said that there were a number of subscriptions yet to be paid. The balance sheet was adopted on the motion of Mr A. AA T . Just, seconded by Mr C. AA r . Erenstrom. Officers for the ensuing year were elected a 3 follow: Patron, Mr F. J. Nathan; president, Mr L. Hartog; vicepresidents, Messrs A. AV. Just, C. H. Handley, P. Black, J. Galland and D. S. Robinson; committee, Messrs J. Adamson. J. B. Speedy, A. J. Shailer, A. L. Miles, F. J. Melhuish, AV. Doak, and A. K. Dallas; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. AA 7 . Erenstrom. Mr Stevenson said that be was forced to decline re-election as secretary owing to pressure of work. Tributes to the work of Mr Stevenson during the past year were paid, it being stated that he had carried out his duties most creditably to himself and to the society.
