SPRING RACING

DOMINION -WIDE FIXTURES SECOND DAY AT FEILDING HANDICAP TO TIGER GAIN Racing was in progress at various points of the Dominion to-day, the two-day fixtures of the Feilding and Winton Clubs being concluded; the Takapuna Club entered upon its spring gathering, while the Ashburton County Racing Club held a one-day meeting.

FEILDING RACES. HURDLES TO RUANUI. Dull and soinewhat uncertain conditions prevailed for the concluding day of tho Feilding Jockey Club’s spring meeting, but there was a very fair attendanco of patrons, nevertheless. The course, which was somewhat hard on tho opening day, had benefited to some extent by the rain of the early morning, and the indications aro that the majority of the acceptors will fulfill their engagements. RUANUI’S IMPROVED SHOWING. IMillion, who had not recovered from her fall on the opening day, was the sole defection from the Cheltenham Hurdles, for which Ruanui was installed favourite from Manuiri and Riotous. Ruanui showed an improvement to win nicely. Air Laddie and Manuiri were the early leaders, but Cotsficld took up the running going into the back, only to give way half a mile from home, where Ruanui and Manuiri moved up to the leader. Air Laddie, Manuiri and Ruanui were together at tho final fence, and in the run homo Ruanui finished best to win by one and a half lengths from the first day’s winner, Air Laddie, who was three-quarters of a length in front of Manuiri. March Alone followed in fourth place, with Cotsfield next. Riotous was never racing generously at any stage, and drifted over the last five furlongs. ALL SUPREME THE BEST NOVICE. All 14 acceptors went to the post in the Novice Stakes, Widden being made a good favourite, although there was good support for Calydon, Maypay and Wyndale. However, the favourite failed to repeat his performance of the first day, although he had every chance. Aweketia, from the inside position on the rails, was Smartest to begin, and she led Widden, Wyndale, Maypay and Hard Times to the turn, All Supreme, Takurangi and Top Flier being slowest to begin. Wyndale took charge running across the top and was first to straighten out from Aweketia, Widden, Calydon and Tahurangi. Inside the distance Calydon ran to the front and promised to be the winner, but All Supreme came from the body of the field to beat the Awapuni representative by a length, with Maypay, who ran wide at the turn, third a neck aawy. Wyndale was fourth, with Widden and Tahurangi next. TIGER GAIN EASILY. View Halloo was installed a firm favourite from Carfex and Tiger Gain for the St. Andrew’s Handicap, but the topweight was finished with three furlongs from home after being in the picture up to that stage. When the field was sent nway Tiger Gain ran to the front immediately to pilot View Halloo, Carfex, Arrow Lad and Aiguille as they passed through the straight. Tiger Gain opened up an interval going along the back and he turned for home three lengths clear of Carfex and View Halloo, with Arrow Lad and Aiguille handy. The favourite retired approaching the straight entrance, and in the run up the straight the leader drew right away to win by five lengths from Carfex, with Aiguille a length away and just ahead of Arrow Lad. Arikira, yvho gave an improved performance, finished fifth. LORD HEREFORD’S NURSERY. Note Issue was backed down to a very short figure for the Oroua Nursery Handicap, Palm and Lord Hereford being next in demand. From insido position at the barrier Palm showed a lot of early speed to pilot Lord Hereford, Scholar and Note Issue to the turn and across the top. The field closed on the leader approaching the entrance to the straight and Lord Hereford was the first to show out from Palm, Note Issue and Scholar. In the run to the judge’s box Lord Hereford hold on to beat tho favourite by a short length, with Scholar one and a half lengths back ahead of Burnish. Palm weakened to finish fifth.
