TENNIS STAR’S HEALTH.

DEVOTED WIFE’S HELP. NURSING BEFORE MATCHES. Though H. W. Austin, the English tennis player, beat Miki, of Japan, at Queen’s Club, London, on October 17, by a score that suggests he is in excellent form, Austin is, in fact, in the grip of a secret illness, says the old Australian international, S. N. Doust, in the Daily Mail. What that victory . cost Austin is known only to his wife’ who through two years of married life has been constantly nursing, encouraging and advising him. She gave up stage and. film work for it. Mrs Austin says: "Although ‘Bunny’ decided to play at Queen’s Club I was half hoping he would lose and be able to rest. He was never strong. He cannot eat the foods necessary to provide stamina for the enormous exertions of the tennis court. He insists, too, on devoting equal thought and energy to his business. " ‘Bunny’s’ health relapsed seriously after he had helped to win the Davis Cup. He became alarmingly thin, necessitating consultations with a specialist, who ordered new treatment, as the result of which I am more hopeful, but he needs constant watching. "Unkind and unknowing persons sometimes ascribed a reason other than illness for ‘Bunny’ cracking up in a match which he had begun brilliantly, but he has been really unable to stand the strain.” Mrs Austin was formerly Miss Phyllis Konstam, a film actress.
