EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” OCTOBER 30, 1903. Mr James Ritchie Rad been selected for the position of assistant teacher at the Palmerston North District High •School. The first anniversary of the Bunnythorpe Christian Endeavour Society had been held and the following officers elected : —President, Rev. S. Lawry; acting president, Mr J. Print; vice-p residents, Messrs Arnold and A. Jeffries; secretary, Mr J. Fowler; treasurer, Mr F. Dixon; organist, Miss Henson. The work of constructing the electric tramway system at 'Wellington had been commenced on October 29. when the Mayor (Mr Aitken) had driven the first pick on Thqrndon Quay. Several ships were searching for the Ovalau, a vessel missing between the Islands and Australia. No news of the boat had been received. Two balls were to be held in honour of Lady Ranfurly. wife of the Governor, who was relinquishing office at the end of his term. An address and st number of water-colours were to be presented to Lady Ranfurly by the citizens of Wellington.
