Hon. C- E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture, arrived in Palmerston North shortly after noon on Saturday to open the new factory for Vacuum Products, Ltd. Associated -with the Minister were Dr. C. J. Reakqs (Di-rector-General of Agriculture), Dr. E. Marsden (secretary of the Department for Scientific and Industrial Research, and Mr IV. M. Singleton (Director of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture). There passed away at Auckland on Friday morning at the age of 49 Mr Lancelot Gerald Hemus, the former Auckland and New Zealand representative cricketer. He is recalled by Auckland cricket followers of a former generation as one of the greatest batsmen New Zealand has known. As a boy Mr Hemus was picked out as a batsman of exceptional promise and, as a colt, he stepped into the Auckland representative team, quickly made good, and held his place for many seasons as opening batsman. He started his career as a New Zealand representative batsman in the 1906-7 season, when lie was one of the most prolific run-getters of his time. Scores of 64 and 80 against j Captain Wynyard’s M.C.O. team in j the match in which Auckland drew with i the visitors paved the way for his | selection for New Zealand.
