HOROWHENUA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, Oct. 27. In connection with tho Otaki Methodist Church, the anniversary social was hold in the Parish Hall on Wednesday night. Tho attendance was of an excellent character and a very fine programme was presented by tho chidlren. Miss L. Lochore, Miss Meta Taylor and Miss Hope Dixon had been preparing the items for some weeks and much credit is duo to them for the results revealed at the social. The secretary, Mr C. Gillispie, submitted his annual report which stated that attendances had been well maintained and tho examination tests showed that a high average of marks had been won in the recent Sunday School Union examination. Tho superintendent, Mr H. Cockrell, in his remarks uttered some words which were most appropriate to the occasion and constituted sound advice to parents and friends. There was no desire to take children from other Sunday Schools, he said, but there were many boys and girls who did not attend any Sunday School and these should bo encouraged to come. Rev. M. Ayrton presided over the gathering and expressed his thanks to tho staff of the Sunday School for their devoted and painstaking work in ■that most important department of Christian enterprise. The value of tho Sunday School could bo better appreciated, he said, if we could realise tho stato of affairs that would exist if there wore no Sunday schools and no system of religious and Christian instruction for the benefit of the young. He- considered tho finest display of patriotism that could bo shown was in qualifying for Christian citizenship.
