CLOSE CALL.
LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT. A dose call was witnessed at the Cook Street level crossing yesterday. In watching a shunting engine, Mr J. Moore, of Taihape, failed to notice tlie approach of the Wellington express from the opposite direction when lie was crossing the line in his car, and found the train nearly upon him when the car was within a few feet of the rails. He swerved the vehicle to run alongside the line with the train and was exceedingly lucky in that the engine caught only the protruding end of the front bumper, which was twisted while the springs were also slightly damaged. Mr Moore escaped without injury. •
