RACING NEWS

FROM STABLEAND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”) The Awapuni team of horses which attended the Wanganui meeting only won one race, but wore in places on live occasions. Pango ran two totally different races at Marton and Wanganui, yet won on both occasions. At Wanganui he had to come from the rear. Allowed to make his own paco and without having the leadership contested, Knollmere’s brilliance on the flat proved too much for Henry of Navarre at Wanganui. It was only fitting that the final event at the Geraldine meeting—the Champion Hack Handicap—should have been won by Grand Finale.

Superior, a chestnut filly by Colossus from Rillet, did not belie her name in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday. Pladic registered his second success under silk in the Trial Handicap at Wanganui on Saturday. Karly last season the Paladin gelding dead-heated at Woodvillc, but he did not gain a clear-cut win till the Rangitikei Hunt meeting in July. The Morris Bros had a good innings at Wanganui on Saturday, L. G. Morris riding three successive winners, and B. H. Morris then riding the next two successful performers. The weights for the New Zealand Cup find Autopay and Inflation, two Dominion representatives who are at present, in Australia, heading the poundages.. In awarding Inflation 8.6 over a two miles journey the handicapper is taking no risks with the Paper Money colt. Red Manfred, while he failed to reach the £IOOO mark last season, indicated by his victory in the Wanganui Guineas on Saturday that ho may be a more serious contender for classic honours among the tbrec-ycar-olds this season. * The Aus-tralian-bred gelding was bought as a yearling for 200gns. It must be a long time since a horse ridden by L. G. Morris returned to backers a dividend of the dimensions of Fiji’s on Saturday. The Nigger Minstrel gelding lasted just long enough in a falsely run race to win the Higgio Handicap at Wanganui, and the public wore not prepared for his early return to form. Copyist, who won the Maiden Race at Wanganui on Friday and then filled third place in the Wanganui Guineas, had had only one outing with the colours up prior to being brought north from' Riccarton. By Winning Hit from Miss Mimic, he has always shown a good turn of speed, but has been troubled with lameness and his activities have been restricted. The former Palmerston North-trained performer, Haulbowline, who is now an inmate of T. R. George’s stable at B.enheim, registered a success of his lady owner in the Spring Hack Handicap at Wanganui. His ability to begin smartly and the turning nature of the course probably assisted the Top Gallant gelding to some extent. Good things were predicted of Gaysome, a filly by Arrowsmith from Gay Vera, in June" last and slie registered her first success for the new term at Geraldine on Thursday. Her granddam, Lady Holywood, is the dam of Heraldry. The Chief Ruler colt Deputy Ruler did not take long to strike form in Australia, as indicated by his convincing win m the sir Herbert Maitland Stakes, seven furlongs, at Victoria Park on Wednesday last. He had only arrived in that country thioe weeks prior to his success and had only started on two previous occasions. Ihe fact that Deputy Ruler had a 101 b allowance takes some of the “gilr off his victory; still he won with something in hand and ’registered smart time for the journey. He is engaged in the A.J.C. Derby', to be decided on September 30, but it is doubtful if he will be sufficiently seasoned to run out a solidly-run mile and a half by that date However, he is engaged in other important races of lesser distance, and as ho is likely to show further improvement his prospects during the next few months look particularly bright, a northern writer says. , ~ \ private match between horses was witnessed at Goodwod (England) recently when Lady Durham’s filly Montez beat the Duke of Norfolk s filly Quicksilver in a race for £2OO a side. Such contests are generally the outcome of friendly aigument between owners, and that is how this race came about. Lady Durham icmarked to the Duke of Norfolk at a party that his horses were “a pretty poor lot. The Duke admitted the truth of the ciiti cism, but went on to venture the opinion that Ladv Durham’s were no better. IJencc the match. And Lady Durham now has the last word—and the W. £2OO Before racing was organised and controlled, sporting noblemen would wager heavily on one of* their horses beating that of a rival, and it is really due to these matches that racing has become a great national sport. •U Newbury seven years ago on a pouiing wet day, Sir Hugo Cunl.ffe-Oweii s Highborn II defeated the late Mr S. IS. Jell's Oojah in a match for £2OOO a side Highborn II won with the greatest ol case. INFLATION’S SUCCESS.

Inflation came into his own in the Camellia Stakes at Rosehiil on Saturday, September 16, and thereby increased his populaiitv for the Epsom Handicap, for which ho had boon heavily supported A high opin- . ion has always been held of the 1 aper Money horse, who, however, had been exccodingly difficult to train. He arrived from the Dominion recently, but his party did not allow that to stand in tho way of substantial wagering on the suburban course. Ridden by tho New Zealander, T. Green, Inflation was not further back than fourth at any part of the race. He ran into second place about tile half-mile, where the Victorian, Snowfclt, had charge, and remained there until the straight entrance. Inflation was moving so freely that Green allowed him to make bis run thus early, tho visitor going on to win comfortably from Turbine and Whittingham.
