Mardon and Mr A. J. Pascoe; Farmers queen, Mr W. G. Black. Mr Nathan presided. An apology was received from Mr W. S. Carter, the other Farmers queen delegate, for his unavoidable absence owing to indisposition. An apology was also received from the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) who was unable to attend. The nominations received were as follow: Sports (green and white). —Miss Mollie Nathan. Plunket and Nursing Services (red and green).—Miss Joan Barnett. Public Service (royal blue and gold). —Miss Kathleen Richards. Retailers and Business Girls (red and white).—Miss Edna Boon. It was reported that finality had not yet been reached in the selection of the Farmers’ queen and the Theatres and Amusements queen, and the executive agreed to an extension of the time for nomination in view of the fact that activities are not to commence until next Monday. Mr Nathan was elected deputy-chair-man in the absence of the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford). The organiser (Mr D. McDonald) explained several points of the campaign. He said that in Auckland a similar carnival had commenced with a penny drive. It had been held by the central committee and not by the committees for the candidates. The drive had realised £600; and in Wellington it brought in £3OO. He thought that the Palmerston North result would be between £SO and £75. In Auckland the funds of tlie committees had been paid into a special central account and each committee had a suspense account for private efforts such as dances. Those accounts had been secret to each committee, which had allowed a measure of uncertainty that was desirable. They had had a definite agreement with the committees that the expenditure would not exceed 20 per cent, of their receipts. In a general discussion it was decided that each queen committee should have its own banking account and that there should be a central account for common funds in the name of the Central Relief Committee. Some discussion took place on the subject of asking employees in the city to contribute Id a week to the central funds. Mr McDonald said that such funds could be credited to any particular queen. Mr Black thought that such a method of raising funds would re-act against certain of the queens. Business organisations are to be circularised on the subject. It was decided to send a circular to all business firms asking- that no donations of goods be made. It was decided to accept an offer made by Mr C. V. Day to act as secretary for the carnival. Mr P. S. Larcomb is to be asked to accept the office of honorary treasurer, as he is the treasurer of the Central Relief Committee. Such appeals as shop days are to be arranged through the executive in order to prevent clashing. It wa? decided that no committee should commence the actual raising of funds before Monday next. On the suggestion of Mr Nathan it was decided that at noon each day the colours of the various queens are to be flown from a flag-staff in the Square one above the other showing the positions of the queens. A barometer showing the rise of the total of the funds is to be erected above Messrs Goldfinch and Cousins’s premises. At each future meeting each committee is to submit a report showing what its next week’s activities will be in order to prevent overlapping. At the same time the committees are to submit an account of expenditure and income. Mr Black said that Mr J. Wintor. had advised him that the gatekeepers at the Showgrounds had offered their services gratis for any function. It was agreed that all queen votes are to be counted as one penny each. The organiser is to submit to the next meeting a full suggested plan of campaign.
